Impressed with 22lr ammo quikshok

Camping this weekend with a Friend and he shot a water filled quart sized milk jug with a 22lr quik-shok bullet.

The bullet fragmented as advertised and in the 4 inch's it traveled through water it spread into a triangle exit pattern with 3 inch's between pieces.

The idea is that this ammo is supposed to fragment and spread to increase bleeding and shock cavity as the three pieces travel at the same rate through the body.

Jug blew out with a six inch crack-split--Shock value seemed high.

Exit holes spread out uniformly--will increase wound channel and produce more bleeding.

I think this ammo would be great for varmints and maybe as a last, last ditch derringer ammo.

Thanks for the tip, I'll have to look into it :D I'm a big fan of CCI Stinger hollowpoints, just for what they do to anything filled with water :bear_w00t: But I hadn't thought much about fragmentation, I'll see if I can pick some up.

That's exactly what I was thinking. I keep a .22 Derringer in my desk drawer.

This was done with a Walther p22 with the short barrel from maybe 4 feet so I don't see a lot of difference between that and a derringer at the same.

The Walther barrel is 3 1/2 inches long (I think)

Yeah, I think my Davis Derringer has about 2 1/2" on the barrel. I'm sure there wouldn't be much difference at all.

Just keep in mind that your penetration is going to be quite shallow. Nowhere near the FBI standards. I personally prefer a deep penetrating load to one that just makes a messy but shallow wound.

Keep in mind that this is a 22 LR round. Either a very well aimed shot out of an accurate long-barreled arm, or, more likely, a lucky shot, will kill someone. Most folks are talking about using it in a last-ditch holdout capacity, and in that situation a shallow but messy wound might have a much greater psychological impact than a deep, but neater shot. Enough of a "shok" value, perhaps, to escape or get to a bigger gun.

If you are using a 22 why just shoot them just once?

If I was using a 22 for protection I would mix the ammo.

The solid points seem to me to be more accurate. I would assume they would go further in a body.

The hollow points brake apart and cause more trauma is the way I understand it. They do not seem to me to be as near as accurate.

I like the CCI Blazers solid points for accuracy. Others are good but I like these the best. They are cheap and the work great for me. I would assume that other brands are as good but I seem to shoot the best with these.

Combining the ammo in the Ruger in your trunk or glove box I believe is the way to go.

I for one would not like this ammo going into my body.
I do not think anyone on this board would want someone unloading a clip of this mixed ammo into their body.

The females I shoot with could kill men with this ammo mix.

In a SHTF type thing and you are just wanting to get home keeping a 10/22 in your trunk I don't think is a dumb idea at all.
If someone brakes into your car you do not lose that much and you can carry a thousand rounds like its nothing on your back.

Satyr, for one, mentioned a derringer. That's 2 shots max. The NAA revolvers are, what, five?

The reason to carry a 22 is because it is concealable. If you want a cheap gun for the car, get a Hi-Point carbine or a used shotgun--both of which, BTW, are cheaper than a Ruger 10/22 these days.

Quickshok is good ammo, I like Velocitor, too.

I agree with WAoG on alternating expanding bullets with solid penetrator bullets in a magazine if you're going to use a .22lr for self defense. I also like the small, lightweight ammo. Sure wish their were more .22mag options out there, something like a P-22 in .22mag would be awesome.

For the P-22 as it is you can either modify a factory follower or get one of these to bump up your capacity.

Since I traded my Bobcat for a Makarov I haven't had a .22 pistol. Something like a 941 or Mini Master would be great to have. With the Mini you have the option of swapping in a .22mag cylinder. Of course a .22mag revolver can fire .22lr too if you're willing to put up with some extraction difficulties and possibly lesser accuracy. You can make a subcaliber device from a spent .22mag case. I sure wish they'd make a .22mag that is just a lengthend .22lr case for greater compatability.
